This problem still exists on Jaunty.  Here are the details.  However if
I start FF3.5 or TB3 with gksudo (as root) subpixel smoothing works like
a charm.

Display settings: 
using "Subpixel smoothing (LCDs)" 
Hinting : slight
Subpixel order : RGB
