Apparently my issue was that the firmware was not installed. I went to (using mouse) the menu->Applications->System->Hardware Drivers. Here I could just click on installing proprietary driver (firmware) for b43. From then on everything went fine.
Technically I think it installed and ran the package b43-fwcutter.
