Public bug reported:

This is an enhancement request.

The pain needs to be taken out of setting up an ethernet bridge.
Ethernet bridging is a very useful feature for users of laptops to
connect both to another machine and to a wider network through that same
machine. Currently not even internet connection sharing is implemented.
This puts Ubuntu, and Linux desktops generally, behind Windows and Mac
OS in this regard.

I managed to set up a bridge on a Gentoo box a few months ago, but it
was hard work for a novice. I completely failed to do it in Dapper
despite all my efforts. Ideally you should be able set up a bridge
through the gnome networking control panel as easily as you can
configure an ethernet port to use DHCP.

** Affects: Ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
