I cannot reproduce this crash on Jaunty (Xubuntu). Behavior may have changed in jaunty from intrepid: now when you add a point in the middle of the line the end point is moved to where you inserted the point. This may be how openoffice.org fixed the bug (I couldn't find a record of it, however).
