Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Installed jaunty- fresh install. All i see on login screen is the box where you
fill the name. Select session/language buttons are gone. Later on I install
xfce4 and lxde, I logout, and -still- no session options. I tried to enable
this in login window settings management in gnome- I dont see such an option at
all...
Tried changing the theme- still no session button or any way to change the
login session to xfce.

After getting really frustrated ,I installed KDM, synaptic gave me the option
to select it as a default login manager.I restarted the machice and I get a
black terminal screen. I login,I run sudo KDM ,and that gets me to kdm-but it
messed up my resolution.
And so everytime I start my computer,I would have to login in terminal and
issue the kdm command to get me to a messed up resolution kdm.

I got frustrated again and tried to run gdm instead- I got error that it
was not executable and some other stuff that I couldnt understand.

My questions are:
Why is select session button completely missing?
Why replacing gdm with KDM breaks both and neither starts when i turn on/reboot
(

** Affects: gdm (Ubuntu)
