I'm sorry this question reached this forum.
Surely, I became frustrated when the installation finished and I couldn't set
the visual effects back to extra.
As I had zenmap installed before doing the upgrade, at the end of the
installation process I was given LaunchPad page to inform a bug. But zenmap
works fine. So I decided to inform of the visual effects problem.
This morning, consulting Ubuntu Forums, I found the solution for my problem,
which I ask you to disregard.
And just for the curious, the solution was to create a directory under my home
dir, named .config/compiz and then, inside that directory, to create a file
named compiz-manager with a line saying "SKIP_CHECKS=yes". This hint was sent
by "gymophett" in response to someone who posted a similar problem there.
