I was able to get this to work by enabling the proprietary drivers and making sure that the goddamn wireless switch on the physical machine was set to "ON". I had no idea this machine even had a switch, nor how it got set to "OFF" but it is a laptop, I stuff it into and out of my backpack any number of times during the day.
