Update: I have remove a OpenVPN connection I connect to via networkmanager and pinging works. Avahi doesn't strangely. Adding the VPN connection (and connecting to it) - ping still work. After a couple of minutes the VPN connection drops and the local pings are dead again. It seems as if disabled VPN connections somehow mess with network manager's settings which don't show up in ifconfig or route -n
