Bugsy, your problem is not necessarily the same as Dan's. Especially you tell that certain applications print for you and others not. So please follow the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, especially the sections "Reporting Bugs" and "CUPS error_log".
