Turns out it was all a coincidence and lack of knowledge on my part.
Normally the errors in the logs from google app engine are pretty
specific but in this case the syntax error did not seem to directly
point to the code I had written, rather it seemed to indicate a problem
with a python module on my system.
Anyway, sorry for wasting everyones time, keep up the good work!
