when you see this in jaunty, please provide what you get when running:
fc-match Arial
fc-match Helvetica
fc-match sans-serif
Also attach the output of ls -l /etc/fonts/conf.d/
also attach ~/.fonts.conf (if you have that))
Also ensure that you have enabled proper antialiasing in gnome
appeareance -> fonts dialog.
