I've managed to get around this problem by installing an old Linksys NIC in one of the PCI slots and telling bios to ignore the onboard NIC.
Apparently a different driver is installed... I happened to grab a SUSE .iso 64 bit cd and went with it cause for once (out of numerous Ubuntu installs) the monitor was configured correctly.
