I have a line in my .conkyrc in the TEXT area:

The intent behind using $$ after the $alignr is to display the actual $
(dollar) sign. The conky installed via Ubuntu repository does not do it
correctly.
I built conky myself, and tried it. It displays the $ sign correctly.
