I have a similar issue. A very basic Sylvania F74 CRT Monitor that has been recognized by at least 10 previous X installations going back years. And I cannot now find a configuration tool or setting that lets me change it. The Display Preferences widget does absolutely zilch when detecting monitors. The refresh rate is set to 0Hz and cannot be changed.
