To better diagnose your problem, could you follow up with the following file:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log 

and the output of the command: "output of lspci -vvnn"

Also, there have been reports of problems upgrading to 9.10 with certain
ATI (radeon) cards. If you know you have an ATI card, you can try to run
the following commands (from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver):

sudo /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh  # (if it exists)
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon 
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri 
xserver-xorg-core
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
