Well, at the very least I have found an application that does work, and pretty flawlessly: "Camera". It is "Camera" under "Add/Remove..." but camera.app in Synaptic. I also installed gphoto in Synaptic, because it was recommended within libgphoto, but I don't believe that had anything to do with this little milestone. Camera is definitely barebones, as far as GUIs go, but there's no arguing with results.
This application also depends on libgphoto, so there goes my theory, probably.
