Seems as if the problem arose because I choose to leave the menu.lst as
it was. So the new kernel 2.6.27.11 was not available on booting and
with the older kernel there was an incompatibility issue with nvidia
kernel modules (at least this is my interpretation of the whole story).
Adding the new kernel to the menu.lst and booting it resolved the nvidia
problems at once.
