Thanks Mabawsa, that worked for me. Recap of my road to trouble: 1) ubuntu 8.10, hibernated fine but didn't wake from suspend. 4GB ram, 2GB swap 2) upgrade to 9.04, suspend worked, but system failed to enter hibernation 3) live cd, extended swap to 4GB, partition got different UUID so I edited /etc/fstab 4) system succesfully entered hibernation but never resumed. always starting 'fresh'. 5) ran mabawsa's fix.
