@ Wolfgang Jeltsch: I know that dfaure's problem isn t necessarily the same problem as ours. But there are quite a couple of Kwin / Xorg freeze problems when using compositing and / or opengl programs (see duplicates of this bug, bug #348450 and probably more...). The problem itsself seems to be difficult to debug, some people are fine using Kernel 2.6.29 but others aren't, so the "freeze bug" in general might or might not have something in common, with different effects on different machines.
btw: Tormod has new radeon drivers in his PPA, you might wanna try them.
