I'd tried the latest Fedora 11 (preview release), and I realized that
its default font rendering is great. Curiously, it doesn't have
autohinter enabled by default (I can't see it in the /etc/fonts/conf.d
directory, although it's in the /etc/fonts/conf.avail). However, its
font rendering settings are *exactly* the same I proposed in a previous
comment:

- In System->Preferences->Appearance, Fonts tab:
  - Rendering = Best shapes
  - In Details:
    - Resolution = 96 dots per inch
    - Smoothing = Grayscale
    - Hinting = Medium
    - Subpixel Order = RGB

Even more, the fonts still looks very good even if I change the font
hinting or the smoothing setting, unlike what happens in Jaunty.

Does the Fedora font rendering engine differs from the Jaunty's one?

Autohinter should be enabled by default in Jaunty to avoid font rendering
inconsistencies
