To prevent this from happening, a work around I have tried is to add the
following subsection in xorg.conf:

         SubSection "Display"
                   Virtual 1440 1440 <-- Max from xrandr
         EndSubSection

Continuously resolution change without closing the Display Preferences UI, user 
will be asked to set Virtual Display
