I'm having the same problem with a E-MU 0202 USB.
BUT: Sound output temporarily works if i kill pulseaudio ("pulseaudio
-k") right before i start playback. Pulse will then start up and
playback (100% confirmed that sound goes through pulse). If i stop
playback and start another application / restart my audio player,
playback will fail and the client will hang / be unresponsive until i
manually kill pulseaudio again.
