Public bug reported: I believe this is connected to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/209520 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/207072 but I'm flummoxed. Sometime in the last week, I went to open a Samba share on my desktop, one that I use almost every day, and got an error: Unable to mount location Failed to mount Windows share This is the text of cusvr.desktop [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Encoding=UTF-8 Name=CU SVR Type=Link Icon[en_US]=gnome-panel-launcher Name[en_US]=CU SVR URL=smb://{username}:{passwo...@cusvr/{share}/directory Icon=/home/amanda/Graphics/icons/little owl.ico GenericName[en_US]= The next day, it worked fine. A few days later, it stopped working and didn't seem to come back. So I started sniffing around. Per advice at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/209520 I tried editing smb.conf, though I couldn't figure out how to reload it, since there's no entry for "samba" or "smb" in my /etc/init.d/ -- I was able to connect by making a new connection in "Connect to Server." The next day, "Connect to Server" was decidedly not working, so I tried: sudo smbmount //cusvr/{share}/ /mnt/cusvr -o username={username},password={password} Which *did* work, and once I'd mounted the share, I was able to use my desktop shortcut again. Great! This morning, I tested the desktop shortcut and it did work. Great! And then an hour later I actually needed to use it and ... nope. Now the error reads: Couldn't display "smb://cusvr/share/folder". There is no application installed for this file type But it worked an hour ago! So I tried smbmount again, which worked yesterday. Today it tells me: mount error 5 = Input/output error Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs) So: this isn't working. And I can't figure out why not. I can't even tell where to look for errors.
