I can confirm that the suggestion given by John Keith Hohm to add the
line:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell
To:
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Does improve the situation on Ubuntu 9.0.4 remix. After doing this I
also have the "Speaker" option in the mixer.
I do not have any system sounds, however.
I did not do any of the pulse steps he mentioned.
