Can you reproduce this issue when using Jaunty? If so, please attach
your lspci. If you can get the /var/log/Xorg.0.log or a gdm log (in
/var/log/gdm/) that shows an error message, that would be important to
see too.
You mention you manage 8 other computers that do not see this problem.
Is this system identical hardware with any of the other 8? If it's not
a 100% clone, what are the differences?
If you switch the video driver to "vesa", does that make the system
start up properly in a normal boot?
Given that X starts correctly when using the recovery mode, I wonder if
the problem is not X.org but rather something further down the stack.
However I'll leave the bug against xorg for now.
