I installed pythonlaunchpadlib (with Synaptic Package Manager) and then I tried hibernate again. This time printing worked. The first time I tried it, the output was pages and pages of random characters.
I have worked in IT for almost 40 years, and I have seen this happen to users when I go to diagnose their problems. I tell them that the best problem for me is one that goes away, so long as it doesn't come back. I don't like it happening to me, but then I remember, this same laptop sometimes refuses to boot on the first attempt, and other times, the wireless won't connect on the first attempt. It is an Acer Aspire 5100, and I am getting suspicious of the hardware. Arrrggghh! Thank you for your help. You may mark the bug report "resolved".
