To clarify this: If you want to install plugins, apt-get install abiword-plugins The "Install Plugins" button in AbiWord is only for running plugins that are not in the "expected locations" (that is, if there were third party plugins, development stuff, etc) and does NOT need to be used by the average person. You can pretend that plugin dialog doesn't even exist and you'll be able to use your plugins just fine.
