Sorry guys, my fault, this is not a bug but I could not find a way of cancelling the bug report.
With the kernel upgrade to 24-24 the alsa version was reset to v.15 (ubuntu standard) Because I ran the alsa update to v.19 after the kernel upgrade but before rebooting it picked up kernel version 24-23 (which explains why the boot old worked). Have now upgraded alsa to v.19 using kernel 24-24 and the problem has been solved.
