Let me start by saying thanks for your work on this great free product.
Info on my problem:
-My video card is a RIVA TNT PCI card.
-I installed command-line-only Ubuntu from the Alternate install CD.
-It displayed correctly when I used an S3 PCI (AKA McFlicker) video card.
-I am using Ubuntu 9.04
-The characters display perfectly before Ubuntu loading begins
-I am able to at least see the whole screen if I force grub to load vga=261
(VESA 256 color mode).
