I can confirm this bug is not rhythmbox specific. I experience the same bug with exaile, though not so often.
As far as I understand it, this is a firefox/compiz issue, the same high cpu scrolling issue that haunts firefox in linux for months. I managed to solve the "slow scrolling issue" in big pages (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/125970) installing the latest nvidia drivers (180) but started to experience this bug with the sound. The crossfading fix solved it for me, although scrolling on big pages still causes high cpu usage.
