The working solution is here: /usr/share/doc/python-matplotlib/NEWS.Debian.gz /usr/share/doc/python-matplotlib/README.Debian I'm pretty sure Benjamin kept this file from Debian to Ubuntu. There is documentation written ad-hoc for this change.
