I recently installed a custom kernel, and on that custom kernel, the
brightness level showed up correctly. I had been trying build a kernel
that took advantage of kernel mode setting for my Intel i915 card. I
also compiled some other options into the kernel, and I think one of
them might have done it. I suspect dell-laptop, but I'm not entirely
sure. In my custom kernel it was used as a module, but I don't think it
is included as such in the Ubuntu kernel.

I'm going to go look up how to compile the module outside of the kernel,
but I can't help but feel that the module should at least be included
with the kernel. I know it was previously, because my brightness used
to work correctly.
