If the workarounds mentioned in that report work for you (I'm thinking
of the ACPI blacklist, particularly, or booting with ACPI=off), then you
are likely experiencing the same bug. (By works for you, I mean you can
switch the machine off, etc. Obviously you won't get ACPI power
management.)
Gareth, you have a different bug. If ACPI works on your machine, you
might consider opening a bug report to get your laptop whitelisted for
ACPI support (please consider searching for other acpi white list bug
reports, you'll see what's required).
