When the partition manager first opens, some of the time (much of the time) the display just shows an empty device and reports no OS installed, even when there are partitions and an OS on that device. The display simply needs to be refreshed. A workaround (if you have more than one HDD) is to point the partition manager at another device, and then back to the one you want to see. When I do this, all the partitions show up correctly, and any existing OS on that device is recognized and correctly reported.
