Pi Boy, does mannheim's advice fix the issue for you? BTW, notify-osd only displays what gets send to it. Thus it is not correctly filed. The correct packages in this case would be gnome-settings-daemon. That's the application triggering the volume-notifications based upon the keyboard multimedia-keys.
