The cdrkit package provides wodim, it should however provide cdrtools
(confusing?)
However, cdrkit depends on brasero, or the other way round. i now removed
wodim, which in turn removed brasero.

So. there is a ppa which provides deb packages for cdrtools and mkisofs,
because is's not to up to jaunty yet i installed the two by hand instead of
adding it to apt:
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-burning/ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/c/cdrtools/

Now i seem to have a proper version of cdrtools - but i can't install
brasero because it requires wodim, which conflicts with cdrtools. And as
luck plays it's hands, i don't have a blank cd to test from the command
line.
