Public bug reported:
On a Ubuntu 9.04 laptop with KDE 4.2, launching QGIS causes total system
freeze (no reaction to keyboard, power button, cannot ssh from another
box). This failure happens only if the KDE Desktop Effects are enabled.
This laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 video card with a standard
radeon driver.
