The VLC media player has the exact same symptoms - 
the movie I'm using to reproduce the error is 512 x 288 XVID MPEG-4 25 frames 
per second AC-3 audio Surround 5.1 48000Hz 384 kbps.

I did manage once to switch to tty1 but usually I can't do anything just get 
many error messages on the screen. I didn't try restart xwin.
I'm guessing this is the ati driver ... but as far as I know the Catalyst 
control center doesn't let me adjust anything useful.
