I was using Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) until 23rd April, 2009. I downloaded Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) on the release date and installed it on my laptop with an etx4 filesystem. The system randomly freezes (hangs) with both the caps lock and scroll lock LEDs flashing. It does not respond to any user input via the keyboard or mouse nor does pressing the power button do anything. Although, holding the power button until the laptop powers down is the only way to shut it down.
This has happened on various occasions and does not happen due to specific keyboard or mouse input. My laptop is powered on the entire day and sometimes for several days at once. So, when I leave I lock the screen by pressing Ctrl+Alt+L and when I get back after a few hours I have noticed that the computer has automatically frozen with both the aforementioned LEDs flashing. This has also happened during normal computer use like browsing and working on an image in GIMP, etc. I am writing this comment after a hard reboot that was forced upon me by one such random freeze. This has never happened on Ubuntu 8.10. Kindly advice on what needs to be done to resolve this. If any further information / file output is required please let me know.
