Theodore, thanks for the info. I don't have a lot of time this morning before work, but I was able to run one test which illustrates the problem. In the attached dstat output, I copied 3.4GB between two eSATA HDD. It started off fast (as usual), but by the time the copy finished the dialog was showing about 5.5MB/s.
