The session is dead. Nothing is happening, it typically goes dead after it's been open for a while and I haven't been using it. I wouldn't mind it dying, if I can start a new connection, but I can't. It takes a while before I can start an sftp connection to the same host again, unless I re-login. I have only noticed this behavior with one site - my own server - because that's the only site I regularly use sftp with. I haven't seen this behavior when I use my laptop, which has Ubuntu 9.04 also, on 32 bits.
