I also have HP Laserjet 4000N and replaced the pdftops by this newer version of the alternative pdftops filter Till recently posted here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/377011/comments/9 and made it executable with "sudo chmod 755 /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops". Printing works fine now with the HP LaserJet 4000 Series Postscript (recommended) driver!
