The problem is also present on acer aspire 6930 with Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04. It seems that "front mic boost" and "mic boost" controllers increase the signal level. When testing with Sound Recorder, they amplified the volume of the white noise. The "mic" and "front mic" contollers don't change anything perceptible to the recordings.
