Apparently the cause of the slow transfer rate is that the device is recognized 
as an USB 1.1 device :(
Well, at least now ubuntu does it automatically.

Note that the "connect to a high speed hub" message is rubbish:
connecting a different usb hdd to the same port works fine at high
speed.
