FWIW I had similar behaviour until I nuked my ~/.pulse and ~/.pulse- cookie and started over; then everything worked. Jaunty (9.04), with my home directory restored completely from an 8.10 install. Sound card is Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop.
