I enabled Pre-released updates in the software sources application. Then I installed the package linux-backports- modules-jaunty. The wifi problem seems to have been solved. And I haven't experienced any side effects. I have now disabled the Pre-released updates and hope that all goes well. Maybe this will help others. But I'm just a user trying some stuff and no linux expert so this is all at your own risk. This also solved another unrelated wifi issue my parents were experiencing.
