I have the same problem, almost exactly.

The only difference is that I get a grey bar across the screen (which
looks like a graphics artifact).

I can't be positive but it looks like it hangs just as the "loading
progress bar" comes up (which is when I get the grey bar across the
screen).

The problem happens when I'm connected to the dock and have all the
extra hardware and when I'm not connected and have nothing but the
laptop.

I'm currently evaluating Ubuntu in order to switch myself and later the
rest of my family to a linux deployment, however things like this mean I
can't use it like I want to, which does not encourage me to switch.

A little about my environment:
- HP Pavilion dv8000
- Dual boot with WIndows XP (all the latest patches but I don't think that
should matter).
- Ubuntu has 20g of Disk space to play with.
- Second drive visible to Ubuntu with an NTFS partition.

I was kind of disturbed to see the status of this issue as "Unconfirmed"
and a priority of :Undecided" as its the one thing stopping me fron
spending more time in Ubuntu to get a feel for it.
