Aleksander, I'm attaching the files as requested. When I booted up just now I had to go to recovery mode, where I chose the option to try to fix graphical problems and continue booting, so this xorg.conf file is freshly generated. The system's efforts to fix the problem were only partially successful. I was able to continue booting (the system had hung during boot before) but the resolution is still maxed out at 1024x768.
