Thanks, after yet another restart I was able to read your mail! I'll try
it, as I am fairly sure it will happen again ... I had this problem once
before with the previous version of Ubuntu and eventually tried
Evolution (which i don't feel comfortable with.) 
I compare your rapid response to a request for help from Microsoft: they
send you a link to the pages you have already searched through  and tell
you it must be your machine. ...
