1/2. new information:

I was logged into the server during one "clock freeze" and could
continue to use the bash with simple commands (don't remember which, I
guess: ls, cd, etc.) for several minutes. (ssh remote login, no new
connection was possible though)
During that time my shell prompt, which shows the current time, always
showed a static minute (17:14) during the whole period. Seconds are not
displayed in my prompt.

2/2. answer to last post (relation to bug #39602 ?):

I conclude both bugs may be related but do not share most of the
occasions and symptoms. Details:

Common:

- hosts in both bugs freeze (not all reported hosts)

- hosts enduring both bugs share some error messages during boot,
(CFI: Found no "amd76xrom" @ffc00000 device at location zero
JEDEC: Found no "amd76xrom" @ffc00000 device at location zero)

- similar or same hardware

Uncommon:

#39602: runs for 10 min. to 1 hour after boot, then freezes
#379930: both freezes of this bug happend days after booting

#39602: for one report it happens when modprobing a certain module
#379930: module is loaded without a freeze

#39602: more likely happens during an rsync of 1 GB
#379930: One crash happend during the night where lots of rsync is done
but the other crash during daytime, when no rsync was sheduled.

#379930: in the same minute as calling ntpdate
#39602: not reported

#379930: linux clock does not increase anymore
#39602: reports described as a "complete freeze" AFAI understand them

#379930: ping is still answered
#39602: not reported

#379930: local console still shows log messages, allows console
switching, still allows entering username and password
#39602: not reported

#379930: remote ssh shell still allows commands and shows results for
several minutes
#39602: not reported
